BELIEFS

BELIEFS

We Believe...

The Bible is the inspired Word of God and is the basis for any statement of faith. Though we believe the Bible to be our entire statement of faith, this is our representative doctrinal statement to aid you in knowing what we believe.

1. We believe that the Bible, consisting of the 66 books of both the Old and New Testaments, is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, written by men under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

Psalm 119:105; Isaiah 55:11-12; Mark 13:31; John 8:31-32 & 20:30-31; Acts 20:32; 2 Timothy 3:14-17; Hebrews 4:12 ; 2 Peter 1:19-21 & 3:15-18

2. We believe that there is one God, the creator of heaven and earth, who is an infinite and eternal Spirit and unchangeable in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.  God exists in three persons - the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit.

Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 23:9; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 10:21-22; John 1:1-2,14, 3:16, 6:27, 10:30, 14:26, & 16:7-15; Acts 5:3-4; Romans 1:7; Galatians 4:6; Colossians 2:8-9; 1 Timothy 1:1-2; Titus 2:11-13; 1 Peter 1:3

3.  We believe that Jesus is God who embodied human flesh. We believe in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, His miracles, in His substitutionary atonement for man's sin on the cross of Calvary, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and His future return in power and great glory.

Isaiah 53:4-6; Matthew 1:18–25 & 20:28; Luke 1:26–38; John 1:1-3,14 & 20:28-31; Acts 1:11; Romans 5:6–8, 6:9-10 & 9:5; 2 Corinthians 5:21; I Timothy 3:16 ; Hebrews 7:25 & 9:28; 1 Peter 2:21–24

4.   We believe the Holy Spirit’s ministry to the world is the conviction of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment and whose indwelling ministry to the saints is the empowerment to live a Godly life, dedicated to serving Christ and His Church. We believe one receives the Holy Spirit by believing in Christ. To be baptized with the Holy Spirit means that Christ places us by means of the Spirit, in union with Himself and His church. The evidence of having received the Holy Spirit is the fruit of the Spirit. We believe that though the baptism with the Spirit is a one-time experience, the filling with the Spirit is a repeated reality as we live so as not to grieve or quench the Spirit. All believers are given spiritual gifts as determined by the Holy Spirit for the common good and ministry of the body of Christ.

Matthew 3:11-12; John 7:37-39, 14:16,17,26, 15:26,27, & 16:9–14; Acts 2:38 & 11:15-17; Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 3:16, 6:19 & 12:1-13; Galatians 5:22–26

5.  We believe in salvation by God's grace through faith alone in the Lord Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. We believe this new birth is the result of the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit and is evidenced by a changed life, submitted to the Lordship of Christ. We believe in the perseverance of the saints by the sovereign power of God.

Genesis 3:1-24; John 3:16 & 6:37-40; Romans 6:1-4 & 10:9-10; Ephesians 1:13-14 & 2:8-10; Titus 3:4-7; Hebrews 3:6

6. We believe that at the end of time the dead will be raised and Christ will judge all men in righteousness.  The unsaved will be consigned to hell and the righteous will dwell forever in heaven with the Lord.

Matthew 16:27; Mark 14:62; John 14:3; Acts 1:11; 1 Corinthians 4:5 & 15:1-58; Philippians 3:20; 1 Thessalonians 4:15; 2 Thessalonians 1:7–10; 2 Timothy 4:1; Titus 2:13; Revelation 20:4–6,11–15

7.  We believe in the spiritual unity of all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Body of Christ who is the head of the Church.

Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 12:12; Ephesians 2:19–22; Hebrews 10:23–25

LEADERSHIP

LEADERSHIP

Matt Blair

Lead Pastor

Matt was born and raised in Calhoun County, Alabama. He began following Jesus in the summer of 1991, and he says it has been an amazing journey ever since. Starting in 2001 Matt lived in Mobile, AL, New Orleans, LA, and Oak Island, NC for a total of six years. He married his wife Bethany on February 25th, 2006, and they moved back to Alabama in May 2007. He says it’s been so wonderful to be back home and to be a part of the ministry of the gospel here.

Matt is so grateful for Church Of The Cross and the opportunity to serve with our other elders and with our staff as lead pastor. He loves our church, and has enjoyed raising his family here. Since coming on staff, Matt & Bethany have had four daughters, Annabel, Evelyn, Lucy, and Joanna. It is Matt’s sincere desire to lead our church in loving God, loving others and making disciples. He would love to get to know you, encourage you in your relationship with the Lord, and hopes to see you soon!

Ken Ballard

Associate Pastor

It is Ken’s passion to know Christ and to introduce others to Him. Nothing motivates him more than to see someone grasp one of God’s principles and then start applying it in their life. Ken believes genuine faith in Christ is relevant and applicable to life, and he enjoys few things more than communicating that truth with whoever will listen. Ken would love the opportunity to get to know you!

Jonathan Franks

Worship Leader / Student Minister

Jonathan served as a volunteer at Church of the Cross for over a decade before having the opportunity to come on staff full-time as the Worship Leader and Student Minister. He loves leading our people to worship God in spirit and truth, and helping families to disciple their students. Jonathan is originally from Homewood, AL, but has been a resident of Calhoun County since attending college at JSU. He and his wife, Brittany, and their two sons Levi and River love being a part of COTC, and hope they have the opportunity to meet you soon!
